CITIZENSHIP BY CONFERRAL

The most common pathway for permanent residents

Eligibility & Residency

Generally 4 years of lawful residence in Australia including 12 months as a permanent resident.

Character Requirement

Applicant 18+ must provide police clearance and background checks to prove good character.

Citizenship Test

Applicants aged 18 to 59 must pass a test and attend an interview on Australian values, rights & responsibilities.

Residency Presence Rules

Not more than 12 months absent in the last 4 years and not more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.

5. Citizenship Ceremony

Upon approval attend the citizenship ceremony make the pledge & receive your certificate.

PROCESSING TIME & CEREMONY

Your Final Step to becoming an Australian Citizen

Processing time varies depending on application volume, completeness and individual circumstances. The department of Home Affairs regularly updates estimated timelines.

The final step is the citizenship ceremony schedule by your local council where you will formally become an Australian citizen after taking the pledge.

Citizenship by Descent - Children of Australian Citizens

Eligibillty Criteria

Born outside Australia with at least one Australian citizen parent at the time of birth.

Required Documents
